Road running · Five questions
Answer five quick questions. Get a road-running rotation built around how you actually run – and what to use each pair for.
01 – The runner
Age is one small input to how much cushioning and support we favour. Gender is never used to pick shoes.
02 – Experience
Your running history sets how many pairs a rotation should hold.

03 – Training
Your target changes how the rotation is weighted – not how many shoes it holds.

04 – Pace
Optional. Skip it and the rotation is built from experience and goal alone.
Your normal, everyday running pace – not your race pace.
Estimated race times
Estimates, not predictions
Based on the Riegel formula applied to your everyday pace. Most weekly running should stay comfortably slower than this.

How rotations work
Each pair has a job. That is why a runner with one all-rounder often ends up with three pairs that each feel better on the day they are meant for.
01
Covers most of your easy and steady miles. The pair you reach for without thinking.
02
Soft and forgiving for the days after hard sessions, when the goal is blood flow, not fitness.
03
Protective enough to hold form for an hour or more, stable enough for tired legs.
04
Lighter and more responsive for intervals, tempo blocks and faster sessions.
05
Built for one effort: light, propulsive and tuned to your target distance.
Rotation size follows experience
Education
Short, practical explanations of the concepts that show up in every rotation: effort, pacing, drop, foam and shoe life.
Running basics · 4 min
Easy pace is the pace at which you can hold a conversation – and it should make up most of your running.

Zone 2 is the effort range where you are working, but still able to hold a conversation – the engine room of endurance training.
Read →Running basics · 4 min
A tempo run is a sustained, comfortably hard effort – the bridge between easy running and race pace.
Read →Shoe basics · 4 min
Drop is the height difference between heel and forefoot – it shapes how a shoe loads your legs, not how fast it is.

Plates and super foams make fast shoes feel faster and more protective, but they work best for runners who already train consistently.

Most running shoes stay effective for 500–800 km (300–500 mi), but the midsole tells you more than the odometer.

Trust is a product feature. Here is exactly what goes into a rotation, what does not, and how money works on this site.
Your experience, goal, pace (if given) and budget, with age band as one capped input to how much comfort and support to favour. Role suitability, experience fit, goal fit, pace band, price and availability are scored for every candidate.
It does not diagnose pronation, predict injury, or use gender to pick shoes. Unless your answers favour support, it defaults to neutral shoes.
Role scores, fit notes and ride descriptions are editorial judgements. The ranking, budget enforcement and diversity checks are algorithmic and reproducible.
Prices are MSRP unless labelled as checked, and every card shows when it was last verified. We are not affiliated with any retailer and earn no commission on purchases.
